SPORTS INJURY ASSESSMENT IN CHELTENHAM

When an athlete suffers an injury, understanding the cause is the first step toward recovery. At our Cheltenham Sports Injury Clinic our team provides detailed sports injury assessment to identify the source of pain and build a clear rehabilitation plan.

During an injury assessment we look at the mechanism of injury, joint movement, muscle strength and overall movement patterns to understand how the injury occurred and how it can be rehabilitated effectively.

Many athletes visit our clinic following injuries such as ACL tears, meniscus irritation, MCL injuries, hamstring strains or patellar tendon pain, while others attend with longer-standing problems that have not fully resolved.

Our sports injury clinic supports athletes across Cheltenham and the wider Gloucestershire region, providing clear guidance on diagnosis, rehabilitation and safe return to sport.

OUR APPROACH TO SPORT INJURY REHABILITATION

Effective sports injury rehabilitation requires more than simply reducing pain. Our approach focuses on restoring the physical qualities athletes need to safely return to training and competition.

Rehabilitation programmes are designed around the demands of the athlete’s sport and the stage of recovery they are in. Early rehabilitation often focuses on pain management, restoring joint movement and rebuilding basic strength.

As recovery progresses, rehabilitation shifts toward progressive loading, strength development and movement quality. Athletes may progress through running mechanics, plyometric training and sport-specific movement preparation to rebuild confidence and performance capacity.

For athletes recovering from major injuries such as ACL reconstruction, meniscus surgery or persistent tendon injuries like Achilles tendinopathy, structured rehabilitation and performance preparation are critical to reducing the risk of reinjury.

Our goal is not simply to help athletes feel better, but to restore the strength, control and resilience required to perform at their best.

SUPPORTING YOU IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE & ONLINE

Our sports injury clinic supports athletes across Cheltenham and the wider Gloucestershire region. Many athletes travel nationally to our clinic well as from Cheltenham, Gloucester, Tewkesbury and surrounding areas for specialist sports injury assessment and rehabilitation.

Alongside in-clinic care, we also support athletes through online rehabilitation and remote consultation. This allows athletes to access the same structured rehabilitation support regardless of location, particularly during longer rehabilitation journeys or when regular in-person visits are not possible.

Online support can be particularly helpful for athletes progressing through later stages of rehabilitation, managing ongoing tendon problems, or preparing to return to sport following injury.

Whether working with athletes in person or remotely, our goal remains the same: providing clear injury assessment, structured rehabilitation and guidance toward safe return to sport.

FAQ | Common Questions About Sports Injuries

Athletes often have questions about injury diagnosis, rehabilitation and returning to sport. Below are some of the most common questions we receive at our sports injury clinic.

Can I book a one-off return to sport assessment?

Yes. Athletes can book a one-off return to sport assessment to evaluate whether they are ready to safely return to training and competition. This is often helpful following injuries such as ACL reconstruction, knee ligament injuries or persistent tendon problems.

Assessments may include strength and movement testing, including force plate profiling, to evaluate limb symmetry, strength capacity and movement quality and help guide safe return to sport.

Do I need a scan before booking a sports injury assessment?

No. In many cases a detailed sports injury assessment can identify the likely cause of pain and guide the next stage of rehabilitation. Imaging such as MRI or ultrasound can sometimes be helpful for more complex injuries, but it is not always required during the early stages of injury management.

Can rehabilitation help avoid surgery?

In some cases, structured rehabilitation can successfully manage injuries without the need for surgery. Muscle injuries, tendon problems and certain ligament injuries often respond well to progressive rehabilitation focused on restoring strength, movement quality and load tolerance.

How long does sports injury rehabilitation take?

Recovery timelines vary depending on the injury and the demands of the athlete’s sport. Minor muscle injuries may recover within a few weeks, while ligament injuries or post-operative rehabilitation may take several months. Rehabilitation programmes are tailored to the athlete and their goals to support a safe return to sport.

Can you help athletes return to sport after injury?

Yes. Returning to sport is a key focus of rehabilitation. Our team supports athletes through strength development, movement retraining and performance preparation so they can safely return to training and competition with confidence.

Do you work with youth athletes?

Yes. We regularly support youth athletes experiencing injuries related to sport and growth, such as Osgood-Schlatter disease, Sever’s disease and muscle strains during periods of rapid development. Rehabilitation programmes are tailored to the athlete’s age, sport and stage of maturation.
